"Being an advocate has moral implications that simple services normally do not." I'm not sure that I agree. I always thought that a hired gun was just a hired gun. (Working for whomever hired them, no different that that 'house painter' you mentioned.) Only if someone stepped up and said that they PERSONALLY vouched for someone, or that they ENDORSED them... would I assume that they were putting their personal reputation on the line. (And... if they didn't have to get PAID for that endorsement or recommendation, I'd give it more weight. ;-)
