The leader of the Astana team allegedly tested positive, in the A sample, for a mixed red blood cell population shortly after he won Saturday's individual time trial. This suggests that Vinokourov underwent a blood transfusion shortly before the start of the stage. In this technique, blood is withdrawn from an athlete some time before a competition, and then is injected into his body again when he needs an extra boost. This can also be done with another person's blood. According to the report, based on the analysis of the French anti-doping laboratory at Chatenay-Malabry, Vinokourov apparently used the blood of a compatible donor. The method of doping has not been illegal for long. Athletes at the 1984 Olympics, for examples, admitted to using it. And it has only been detectable since the Athens Olympics of 2004. The first cyclist to test positive for a mixed blood cell population was American Tyler Hamilton, in September 2004. Vinokourov underwent another blood test on Monday, after his second Tour stage victory. The results will be made public as early as Wednesday. It was unclear Tuesday if Vinokourov would be allowed to continue racing in the Tour. Race organizers have said they would ban any rider involved in a doping investigation. If the positive test is confirmed by the so-called B sample, Vinokourov faces a ban from the sport of at least two years. ---------- what an a$$hole
