"a) We can't remove bad teachers from our "universal" education system, so why expect bad doctors to be removed from a universal health care program?"

They don't have tenure and they get paid more. It is a little different.

"These days, it's handled by malpractice insurance"

So now you defend the present system?

"which at least puts some burden on the doctors to perform well."

Not really. Premiums are priced according to the specialty and location. If a doc has 1000 claims, they pay the same as a doc with zero, all other factors being equal. So there is no burden on docs to perform well.

re: > And there is no reason why we couldn't have lower costs due to single payer.

Sure sure, as long as we have the right people in charge ...

It probably wouldn't work exactly like this, but what if you were told your Intel health insurance policy was going to be canceled at the end of the year, and you were going to get a raise that equaled it's cost. Say $4500. Most experts estimate that >30% of that cost is excess from private insurance companies (marketing costs, profits, executive salaries, golden parachutes, etc).

So now you are going to get taxed say $4000, but get better services in many ways without the threats of being canceled or having to fight the insurance company for every dime. And everybody in the country is going to be covered.

Is that so bad?
