For the record, I'm long Intel for the first time in a very long while. Bought 1/2 @ 25 and 1/2 @24.5 a few days ago. I've finally gotten set up for options as well, with an eye towards buying AMD puts. However, Hector does seem to be working pretty hard for the shareholders in terms of strategic issues, even as the company has cratered on the tactical front. Makes for an interesting investment environment!

Re: Anyone on this board care to hazard how long it would take AMD to take a fully functional SOI design and port it to a bulk process? Is this more or less work than taking the same design and porting to a new node (say 65nm -> 45nm)?

It is nearly as much work as a shrink design, because the design rules are all different. The libraries are different, the layout will need to be different, many design tweaks that work with SOI will need to be changed to be compatible with bulk, etc.

Anyone who thinks going back to bulk is just a cakewalk for AMD will be sorely mistaken.

The only touchstone we have on that is AMD apparently ported Barton to UMC's SOI process in about a year. It never reached production, so we don't know if it was buggy or not. I suspect the reason why it didn't make it is that AMD ran into the floating body problem again and didn't have the resources to debug it on two different processes. It certainly killed their promise to be SOI from top to bottom that year.
