Islamabad: One of Pakistan’s top Taliban militants blew himself up during a clash with Pakistani forces near the Afghan border, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Abdullah Mehsud was on the country’s wanted list for kidnapping two Chinese engineers in 2004.

Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema said that Mehsud killed himself with a hand grenade after troops raided his hideout in southwestern Baluchistan province.

"He was killed in a house in Zhob, where he was staying with three comrades," Cheeman said. His three comrades were captured.

Mehsud, a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner, was second in command of a Pakistani Taliban group headed by Baitullah Mehsud.
