I am not sure how much effect it would have on any particular company, but "they can't sell any of their investments and can't access capital/debt markets for let's say a year" was pretty much true after dot com collapse. Capital and debt markets were very tight at that time.

It make come to the same thing with the subprime mortgage collapse. FWIW.
