If so, the Pharisees who asked him the question in the first place would have succeeded in trapping him, given that paying taxes was highly unpopular at the time.

In a swift, clever motion, Jesus shows that the Pharisees are full of it. Paying taxes or doing whatever else the government demands of you is irrelevant to what you should be doing for God.

Alghieri is just playing his part as the "Pharisee."
