Re: "I don't care how politically correct or incorrect it may be, why does everything have to be split into one or another camp? Isn't this your complaint about political thought in general, that people split everything into one of two false dichotomies, i.e., liberal or conservative?"

No.

'Politically Correct' is not a particular 'camp'... not any describable place on a political spectrum.

It simply is the gestalt of the day... what the 'popular' view is. So, no doubt, as society changes, what is the 'Politically Correct Viewpoint' will change along with society.

This decision to *BAN* all depictions of tobacco use from Disney films (despite the fact that tobacco use is still widespread... so, objectively, it is a real part of the world that we live in) amounts to 'papering over reality' so as to present an artificial pretty face for society, a Potemkin Village if you will, an act of propaganda and political advocacy.

Taking a position (for or against) the use of tobacco would also be advocacy... but a Constitutionally protected Free Speech issue. However PRETENDING THAT TOBACCO USE DOES NOT EXIST is an attempt at mind control, a refashioning of objective reality to suit a propagandistic purpose.

The issue of TOBACCO USE though *is* the perfect vehicle to explain how 'Politically Correct' works however!

In the first half of the Twentieth Century, tobacco use was glorified by society (& media), portrayed as 'cool' and 'healthy' and something all adults would aspire to do. It was 'Politically Correct'.

But, the views of society have changed. Now tobacco use is NOT 'Politically Correct' (so it is not portrayed that way by media... or else they try to airbrush it out of society, and out of history, altogether... as Disney Corp. seems to be trying to do here. :-)
