JLA, a decision not to exchange pointless one line insults is no more a retreat, than choosing not to step on crap makes one "afraid" of crap. Some things generally are unpleasant, and thus are to be avoided by most people.

You could say the same thing to people who refuse to scream back at crazy street people. Personally I think knowing when NOT to engage someone in a race to the sewer is the beginning of wisdom. But feel free to call it cowardice. You give so many things idiosyncratic definitions, one more example won't make much difference.
