I think that the demo today of the 3.0G Phenom is a good
data point that indicates the process can hit frequencies
that will be needed.

I find it amazing that you conclude that without knowing anything about the power dissipation of that part, and any special processing (e.g. trading yield for more speed) that resulted in its production.

But you are correct in one thing: That is exactly what AMD wanted everyone in attendance to think when they staged that stunt, their roadmaps notwithstanding.

Re: I find it utterly amazing that people that can't believe a
word from AMD about any of their presentations or charts or
schedules suddenly believe that the yield number on one of
those said 'coils' is trusted.

It's because the people you mention aren't naive, Mike. AMD has so many conflicting numbers in their slide-deck that everything is suspect. But in most cases, AMD errs on the side of ultra-unrealistic optimism. Instead of showing a long overdue array of benchmarks for Barcelona, they show one undisclosed virtualization test against dual core Opteron, and another view of SPECfp_rate, taken against a 2.33GHz Clovertown. That's 2.33GHz, Mike! I shouldn't have to explain to you how far this is from being a fair means of discussing performance, when AMD tests a single benchmark app against an Intel part that is 660MHz away from their top bin, and then claims victory.

Re: It does say less than 0.5
so for we know it could be .35, .30 .45, .25 or whatever.

Mike.... tell me you don't actually believe what you're telling me here. AMD is going to be bold enough to discuss yields on their Analyst Day, but they are actually going to show a figure that, by industry standards, demonstrates their inferiority, only so that they can sandbag and deliver something that is twice as good...? Wake up, Mike, and smell the coffee. Next you'll be telling me that AMD could have their 32nm process available as soon as Q1 2009, since it's on their foil 133.

Re: Let's face it, there is only circumstantial 'evidence' of the yield and binning from AMD

Nice spin, Mike, but the figures come with a clear conclusion. AMD *isn't* having trouble supplying their customers with samples and launching Barcelona on time because they have world class yields and a killer roadmap!

Yes, this is a positive showing. Earlier today, I didn't think they could even overclock a Barcelona core to 3.0GHz. Now I know they can.
