I cannot comprehend why we should simply allow members of an allied country to be slaughtered and not even consider a rescue.

I think that part of it is that folks are less inclined to take risk to rescue people who put themselves in peril. We are all for rescuing innocents even at great expense in both material resources and loss of life. But more and more you hear suggestions that anyone caught climbing a tricky mountain in a snowstorm at the very least should pay for the rescue. And suggestions that lives shouldn't be risked to rescue people who so wantonly put themselves in that position. This venture into Afghanistan was way up there on the "wanton" scale.
