"Why's he doing that? Will he say something different tomorrow...those people always do..." Gates, and the upper more-politicized ranks of the military, are under great pressure --- to be true to their oaths (to our constitution), to tell the truth to the public... and to 'please' the Executive Branch. All-in-all, I think they generally do an excellent job at resisting the pressures and blandishments of the WH to 'bend' their statements so as to better conform to the SPIN issued from the WH. Certainly far better then in most other countries.... Still, the pressure is intense. No doubt much of what you are seeing, (the day-to-day back and forth) is a reflection of that tension... and that pressure.
