Professors aren't included in the H1B cap so this sector is flooded with immigrants. Well there will be one less on 13th September :)

Hmmmm.

I think all the screaming and yelling about illegal immigrants is useless. Want to keep SS and Medicare from going bankrupt? Want socialized medicine (I used to think the US was 10-20 years away; now I think 3-4 years)? Take 'em. The Europeans aren't coming.

I am not sure what you mean in regards to your comments about Haitians and Canada.

In regards to:

The US "Engineers, computer programmers, high-tech workers, some college professors" are frightened of this people coming there.

Frightened of Whom...?

There is a severe limitation on H1B visas due to the lobby of this scared group of professionals.

I work with many people who are in the US on H1-B visas (and many who were formally on H1-B visas..) The majority of H1-B visa holders get green cards (IE become permanent residents..) So it's not like the labor pool evaporates every year. In addition there are separate programs for TN1 Visas (Canadian and Mexican nationals..) and E3 Visas (Australian nationals..) and a host of side programs depending upon the country. Oh yes there is the L-1 visa..

and it's pretty easy to turn a F-1 (student) visa into a work permit. And as Moonimid pointed out Professors are exempt from the H1-B cap, as are government entities and non-profit organizations. The number of H1-B visas handed out last year was over 400,000. For the past 10 years the US has been number one in world in admitting people legally for work. (I believe, per capita, only Canada and Australia are higher..) One thing I notice is there are few workers over the age of 50 in technology in the US.
