you might not be able to handle the facts

Now, that's funny!

In my profession, nothing but nothing surprises b/c after a few decades we have seen it all upwards, backwards, forwards, in reverse and in slo-mo as well sequels 2, 3, 4 and 5 and the re-runs.

Only a certain kind of person dyed in the wool of his own certainty and grandiosity and mono-vision - Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, yelling "You can't handle the truth!" comes to mind - thinks only his own rice has ever been cooked before and only his rice will forever be cooked in the future.

Makes for good drama and impresses the gullible at SI but, really, it's only business. As you mature, you'll look fondly at the episode as only one of many in the newsreel of your memory. But to give it too much weight, well, not even you will care very much in a couple of weeks as the lowering of adrenaline wipes off the edges of the memory and the episode takes its proper place in the scheme of things.

The broad outlines of whatever happened, has happened before, trust me. And it will happen again. And again. Just put a bunch of greedy bastards in the vicinity of A Main Chance, and some version of it will always pop up, all sauced up with betrayal, honor, greed, fraud, sex, low and high cunning, blackmail, bribes...you name it.

But to mistakenly over-dramatize your business rivals in terms of 'the hegemon', yada, yada, etc., etc., really means that maybe the focus was not quite right, that you and your group were not in tune with The Force, that you were skewed somehow, perhaps destined to lose.

Better luck next time.
