For example, did you notice that the blonde's hand was raised high and the Muslim girl's hand looked tentative, yet mindless Marisol called the Muslim girl more confident.

What I noticed was that I, and I believe most others here, agree with Marisol's take. OTOH, I think that you are looking for another 50-post discussion to chew it to death.

Never one to miss out on a good ink blot challenge, I observe something as well.

Marisol's observations seemed over stated, even alarmist. The Muslim girl did appear dignified and astute and I wouldn't have noticed any comparative characteristics from her classmates if not directed to do so. The odd thing for me is not the picture showing a dignified, confident, and assimilated Muslim girl; it is all the objection to that kind of image being held up as a model. I say more, much, much more until it catches on with the masses. Shoot lets make it a fad to compete to see who can conduct themselves with the greater civility and dignity. I doubt if there would be a spec of complaints if more and more photos are shot of radicals protesting something; its too bad but maybe some people need that validation.

Not that it matters, and I am coming in late on this discussion so don't want to carry on about it, but think you will be amused that I agree with both you and Rambi on this.

My take on the picture ...

First I found myself wanting to see the entire classroom and more people in the scene.

But given what we saw:

Muslim woman, tentative, left arm raised only half staff, sleeve on turtle neck top, plus hijab may be too tight. Either shy, or not sure of her answer. Fingers straight, indicates rigidity.

The blonde gal has her arm definitely raised in the air, forward thrust almost wanting to raise the right one as well...is intent on answering....

Gal next to blonde, has her arm half way raised, fingers open. palm up toward ceiling. Seems that she wants to answer, but isn't as confident as blond gal that she has the right answer.

LOL! Hadn't thought of that "technique" in years....but recognize it... <gag>

The Muslim girl raised her hand the way I used to when I really wanted the teacher to call on someone else.
