It's interesting that you and Lane see it one way, while we on the right see it another. I guess we could use it as an "inkblot" test.

Agree.

The higher the hand is raised, the more the student wishes to be recognized, to stick out from the crowd, to participate. Only a self-confident student will extend her arm to the fullest.

But the real point is that conclusions of the kind made by the author cannot be made on the basis of one photo.

Perhaps the Muslim girl forgot to use deodorant and did not wish to offend. Just as reasonable (or unreasonable) a conclusion as the author's.
