get out of Iraq and stop lying and stop running the government without much regard for the broader electorate, beyond the Republican base?

My guess is that mix would work. Voters always vote security first, economy second and values third. Playing Iraq as a homeland security threat no longer works (which I expect to be a major pitfall for the Republican platform in 2008). Absent any other big imminent threats, we get to the economy where many folks in the middle class will be feeling a big pinch. They still have a job but their home values are down, a possible credit crunch is warming up and inflation in their daily lives feels very real.

Addressing those fears will be key to winning in 2008. The "everything is fine, can't you see that stupid?" line from the right is not going to work outside the base, the "haves and have mores".

Beyond that, a values message about bringing people together instead of crotch-kicking partisanship has a good chance to resonate with the voters too. One reason many of us don't want another Bush or Clinton in the White House is that we are sick of the political garbage the two sides have piled on the country in the last twenty years.

Someone who brings a different message but stays credible on security and the economy could win big, IMHO.
