The influx of United Statian miners into BC following the end of '49er gold rush in California was a key catalyst for the formation of BC. Here's a few links about James Douglas, a truly remarkable man who deserves to be thought of as a Father of Confederation. He was part black and married a part-Indian women, and treated the natives equally to the white men.
