Your response seems well thought out and reasonable. My concern is that we have not been listening enough. On that we agree. But I also think you need to listen beyond those who you think are your closest 'friends'. When Ho Chi Minh was just getting started, he wrote to the State Department to set up a meeting. Above all, he was a nationalist. We ignored him. Had we met with him we could have come to a better understanding of his views and perhaps instead of pushing him into the Russian camp and then wasting decades of blood and treasure to fight him, we could have steered him our way. He tried to open the door to talk to us -- but we locked the door and declared him our 'enemy'. This is the sort of thing that costs you a fortune fighting when you could have been doing something more constructive.
