I suppose I was giving Obama the benefit of the doubt -- perhaps in my mind I am thinking about the longer term and hoping that my life and the lifetime of my children will not be one war after another without any hope of resolution -- that is how it looks to me as things stand. A strong military is essential, but so is a strong ability to build diplomatic bridges. I feel safer with China and Russia on speaking terms with the US rather than shouting at each other from a great distance and engaging in surrogate wars and nuclear escalation. Russia and China came to understand that a more constructive relationship was in their interests -- and it is likely over time to change their politics. A constant war footing would have bled all of our finances and put the world on a hair trigger. We need to learn that the dog's tail is as important as the dog's teeth. The teeth say "I can defend myself". The tail says "but given the chance, I would prefer to be friendly". I think we lost our tail a few years back. Now we need to grow a new one.
