<Perhaps the effort to get the degree was a good indication of work ethic.>

When I was a Navy recruiter is exactly how we regarded a high school degree. There was no assumption the applicant knew anything. That is what we used the ASVAB for.

advanced degree is like a social club.. the boss may have had one so he demands others have them.. job descriptions get them written in them to beef up employee relations appraisal of job worth, money wise and responsibility.

it was not just a graduate degree required.. but many form where you needed to get your graduate degree. If not columbia for example if you worked in nyc area then it was worthless in many managers minds. Often many young smart hirees , out of college new exactly what was expected to climb the org chart. those same jobs that required degrees were high school or equiv. back in 60's and supervisor or manager basic degree , then we got education creep because i did you have to do it. its all nonsense and people are throwing money at colleges and families going broke for years to pay off tuition.

certainly some special career jobs require higher education but in the business world hard work, instinct , and good working relationship do just fine.
