Last time the tax code was simplified (no, not the one back with Reagan, which actual made it slightly simpler) it got bigger and more complicated.
Reagan DID simplify the code. He eliminated almost all deductions, resulting in one of the largest tax increases.
As one of his last acts as CA guv he started state income tax withholding; prior to that, CAers had paid their taxes in one payment along with their tax return. You knew exactly what a year of state gov't cost you. When withholding was started, anyone with the brains of a snail KNEW what the next step would be. Amazingly, Reagan sold withholding as a GOOD THING!

I've never figured out why Ronnie is a hero to fiscal conservatives,

Our elected representatives are more likely to join Cirque du Soleil than actually simplify taxes.
That's slander! Cirque de Soleil is a respectable outfit!

And nobody wants to see a Congressman in tights....
What we keep seeing is Congressmen in tight spots. :-) Alaska Senator Ted Steven's house was raided by the IRS today as part of an ongoing investigation.
