As I said there is a price to pay with those drugs and they are not preferred to folic acid. I believe they are more expensive as well. Colchicine can impair the stomach lining. It is more serious in other ways. Read on.

If you still want to stay with these dangerous and expensive drugs in preferrence to a harmless vitamin that will have the side effect of reducing cancer and heart disease I will leave that choice to you.

There is a chance that the water retention could (have been) be helped substantially by losing weight, B1, B6, COQ10, glucosamine sulfate, vitamin C, Quercetin and L-Carnitine. This is a shotgun approach. I suspect your heart was causing it.

Have you got a distinct crease in your earlobe? If you do, then you should eat celery, onions and garlic to excess and drink pomegranate, and eat blueberries every day. Cut out all fats, sodium foods, anything in a package, and cut back on protein drastically. Wipe veggie oil out of your diet, and walk 3 miles a day. Report back in 3 month and tell me how you feel. Regardless of staying on your gout therapy, you should increase your folate and b12 and b vitamin load drastically. Never mind the VITAMIN STUDY reports in the pop press. There is ABSOLUTE PROOF THAT FOLATE AND B12 REDUCE CANCER AND HD. IT IS THE CURVE OF THESE DISEASES SINCE THE FDA MANDATED THE SUPPLEMENTATION OF THESE ELEMENTS IN WHITE BREAD IN 1989. pubmedcentral.nih.gov

It could have been the thyroid and possibly the kidneys. Gout and water retention at your age is a symptom of HD.

COLCHICINE SIDE EFFECTS

Adverse reactions in decreasing order of severity are: bone marrow depression, with aplastic anemia, with agranulocytosis or with thrombocytopenia may occur in patients receiving long-term therapy. Peripheral neuritis, purpura, myopathy, loss of hair, and reversible azoospermia have also been reported.

Vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea may occur with colchicine therapy, especially when maximal doses are necessary for a therapeutic effect. To avoid more serious toxicity, the drug should be discontinued when these symptoms appear, regardless of whether or not joint pain has been relieved.

Dermatoses have been reported. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur infrequently.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Water Retention

Mild fluid retention can be helped in the following ways:

* Reduce the amount of salt in your diet; for instance, don’t add salt during the cooking process and stop salting your meals at the table. Avoid foods like potato chips and salted peanuts. Be wary of processed foods such as manufactured meats, which tend to contain ‘hidden’ salt.

* Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is thought to help in cases of mild fluid retention. Good sources of vitamin B6 include brown rice and red meat.

* Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), calcium and vitamin D help the body to excrete excess fluids. Include fresh fruits and low fat dairy foods in your daily diet.

* Supplements may help in the case of fluid retention caused by the menstrual cycle: for example calcium, magnesium, manganese, evening primrose oil and chaste tree.

* Herbal diuretics include dandelion leaf, corn silk and horsetail.

* Make sure to discuss the use of supplements with your doctor or health care professional, particularly if you are on any type of medication.

* Drink plenty of water. It may sound contradictory, but a well-hydrated body is less likely to retain fluid.

* Cut back on dehydrating drinks such as tea, coffee and alcohol.

* Cranberry juice has a mild diuretic action.

* Lie down with your legs higher than your head, when possible.

* Exercise regularly.

* Wear support stockings.
