Its been the technique of a subset of the right, and a subset of the left, for a long time. The part of the right is mostly the "religious right", on the left it may be a bit less concentrated but you've long had calls for boycotting certain "anti-union" companies, or companies that make profits in wars or by selling to right wing dictators, or profit from very cheep third world labor. For that matter even the strike and other union activity is a form of boycott.
