No we couldn't. Difference between then and now is we intended to win back then. Hasn't been true since then IMO.

When I do WWII alternatives, one of them is, "what if Dolittle's raiders had used firebombs on Hirohito's Palace?"

It would have been easy to spot and do. The odds are prohibitively in favor of the fact that we would have wiped out the entire Royal family. It would have caused the Military command to commit seppiku.

The Army and Navy would have had to coil back into an Island defense.
