I always thought Davy Crockett had the constitutionally correct position. Social Security is funded by its own tax, but I've always believed it fostered an unhealthy dependence on the government. Sometimes people don't have the luxury of choices. Your kids have you. Some people have no one. If you are poor, not well educated and not very bright in this country, chances are you would starve without SS. And even with it, you will not do well. One thing I've learned from Republicans is that they believe we all have full control over our destinies ala Ayn Rand. Its just not true........and strangely enough, they refuse to accept that very basic of premises. If it were true, the people of 9/11 would have chosen not to board the planes they did, or gone to work in the WTC that particular day.
