I find it much more reminiscent of Joe McCarthy myself - anyone who isn't absolutely loyal to the incumbents is a traitor, a fag or both. I agree. But I think Marshall's point, to expand it a bit, is that McCarthy never had a movement behind him. Just a lot of overly frightened voters. Now there is a burgeoning movement replete with foundations, newspapers, TV stations, think tanks, bloggers, etc. I suspect there are fundamental differences between right wing reaction in Germany in the 20s and right wing reaction in this country now. But Marshall makes me think. And worry.
