I believe he is referring to the time when this thread was started. 9/18/2001.

So Oct-01 close 9,011.96
Today close 13,362.37

48.2 % gain for the DOW
(Ok add some for dividends.. maybe around 25% ..?)

Oct 01 gold close = 290.70.
Today 663.70

128.3 % gain for gold.

In essence I believe 2001 in Jay's mind marks the beginning of the new paradigm.
