The ECB had not been scheduled to address the press this month, but analysts do not believe this last minute media call implies that there will be a surprise interest rate rise. "We still suspect that the Bank will keep the refi rate unchanged at 4.00 pct, but assume that the unplanned conference will be used by the ECB's head to say that the ECB is strongly vigilant and thus flag a 25 basis point hike at the September meeting," said Stuart Bennett, euro zone economist at Calyon. The press conference will take place at 1230 BST following the rate announcement at 1145. However the briefing will be embargoed until 1330 GMT. rachel.armstrong@thomson.com rar/gp ---------------------------------------------------------- COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2007.
