The A frame is the only roof that snow will fall off from. Many are going to metal roofing now because that will heat in the sun and the snow will slide off. But shingled roofs with a standard 4 on 12 pitch the snow is there for the winter and roofs up here need to be built to withstand that load.

In the mountains around these parts, metal roofs is pretty much all you see.
