A little Christian mud-slinging from the Republicans..

Huckabee’s Campaign Tells Brownback to Show 'Christian Character'
August 2, 2007

For Brody File loyalists, this is required reading. It's a little long but make sure you read all the way through. What you're about to experience is campaign ugliness. The mud is flying. Be careful. You may get dirty.

Mike Huckabee's campaign manager is absolutely blasting Sam Brownback and his "Christian character." Read more here about this argument, but basically this centers around the fact that a Huckabee supporter sent an e-mail to a bunch of Iowa Evangelicals asking them to reconsider supporting Brownback because he's Catholic. Huckabee issued a statement afterwards but the Brownback camp believed it didn't go far enough and wanted him to actually apologize.

Well, now Huckabee's campaign manager Chip Saltsman decided to lower the boom on Brownback.

Read it below:

"It's time for Sam Brownback to stop whining and start showing some of the Christian character he seems to always find lacking in others. He has attacked Governor Huckabee for something that a Huckabee supporter said in an email sent to two individuals. The person who originated the email has apologized and is not a member of the Huckabee staff. For Brownback to claim that the Governor "owes him an apology" is nonsense and indicates that if Brownback is going to fall to pieces every time a supporter of the Governor says something he doesn't like, he clearly isn't tough enough to be President. The Governor strongly disavowed the statement by the supporter, but that wasn't enough for Brownback. He continued to cry about it. The irony is that unlike Senator Brownback, I have been a Catholic my entire life, as have several of the senior staff members in the Huckabee campaign. Governor Huckabee enjoys strong support from Catholics and for good cause. If Senator Brownback wants to start apologizing for inappropriate things said, perhaps he could pull the "beam out of his own eye before taking the speck out of someone else's" by apologizing for the website 'Baptists for Brownback' that states that Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson and others are 'Hell bound.'

"We don't condone or support attacks on people for their faith--whether it comes from our supporters or from his. Senator Brownback surely has better things to do than police the private emails of a single supporter who said things for which he later apologized and which should have been sufficient for most Christians to accept. As a lifelong Catholic, I was taught that when a person apologized, we were to forgive him and go forward, not shop for other apologies from people not even involved in the original sin. It's time for these silly accusations to stop and for all of us to focus on leading the country and solving problems that the American people care about."

Wow. Ouch! Wait. We're not done! The Brody File just contacted the Brownback campaign and this is what they just sent me. It's hot off the presses:

"Last Sunday, the Brownback for President campaign privately contacted the Huckabee campaign and asked them to intervene and stop this anti-Catholic whisper campaign," said John Rankin, Iowa communications director of Brownback for President. "After two days, the Huckabee campaign did not respond, which left the impression that they would not take action to end the anti-Catholic whisper campaign by their supporters. While we are all delighted that Mr. Saltsman is a lifelong Catholic, we deplore the anti-Catholic whisper campaign being perpetuated by Huckabee supporters. The Huckabee campaign's response lacked a clear denunciation of the offensive contents of the email." "

On a further note, the website that Mr. Saltsman refers to--Baptists for Brownback--is a spoof site with no ties to the Brownback campaign. We are sorry that this obvious parody was lost on Mr. Saltsman."

"In the final week before the Ames straw poll, Senator Brownback wants to focus on the issues that Iowa Republicans care about: a winnable solution in Iraq, scrapping the tax code, restoring the protection of all human life, defending marriage, and the appointment of strict constructionist judges. We are saddened that the Huckabee campaign has criticized Senator Brownback for calling out an anti- Catholic whisper campaign for what it was. The Huckabee campaign's hysterical response is an effort to distract Iowa conservatives from Huckabee's record of tax increases, big government and the pardoning of violent criminals."

The Brownback campaign also provided the Brody File with this email sent from Martin Gillespie, national political director of Brownback for President to Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman two days before this incident became public.

Chip, earlier this afternoon, this was fwded to us by a key evangelical pastor in Ames. I don't know if the author is officially aligned with your campaign in some capacity, but this is disgusting. We've been picking up on a whisper campaign anecdotally from some of our evangelical supporters. Can we count on you guys to put an end to this trash on your end?

You know what all this says to me? It means the August 11 straw poll is just around the corner. Huckabee and Brownback are competing hard to do well there, hoping that a strong finish will catapult their campaign. Iowa Christian conservatives are important here.

The Brody File has great timing because I sit down one on one with Senator Brownback tomorrow in his D.C. office. Check back on The Brody File. We'll play video clips. Bring popcorn.

So... you are pulling for *failure*, aren't you?

(You'd rather attack were they are not, then where they ARE?)

How twisted and defeatist is that?
