He DID 'take 'em on' (and *all the other Kurdish groups*) right after Desert Storm, when Bush I told Saddam's government that we would not shoot down their military helicopters.

That was when Saddam moved to crush the Kurds (& the Shiites who were also following Bush's exhortations to 'rise up against the Dictator' and 'be free').

Our military was forced to stand aside and watch while they were cut down in the streets....

It was the single most disgraceful episode in Presidential politics that I've witnessed in my lifetime. (Worse then the Bay of Pigs. --- 'Cause Kennedy never went on TV and called for the Cubans to rise up, promising our support... unlike Bush I with the Kurds and the Shiites.)
