Politics is like a pendulum. We are hoping that the momentum to the left has been used up.

I found the structure of the economy busting minimum wage hike to be very interesting. It is documented that an increase in the minimum wage causes a recession to be measurable 18 months later. about 12 to 18 months after it, the effect it measurably diminished.

July 2007 > Recession measurable January 2009 - worked out about January 2010
July 2008 > Recession measurable January 2010 - worked out about January 2011 - double whammy probably extends effects to July 2010
July 2009 > Recession measurable January 2011 - worked out about January 2012 - due to triple whammy expect it to be more like January 2013

Presidential election November 2008.
Presidential election November 2012.

The next President will be blamed for the recession and the consumer confidence that the recession is over will lag the actual economic impact. This should make the next President a lame duck that cannot be reelected barring extreme exogenous influences, such as surging popularity from a new war.

Republicans probably think the best they can do is 12 straight years in office and they want to ensure that if a democrat is elected in 2008 that Republicans will win in 2012.

Democrats must think they don't stand a chance in 2008 and they want to ensure victory in 2012.

Just how low can the Dems go when they don't get their way? Let's just say that the worlds limbo cup will no longer be held by the Island of Jamaica<g>:
