In the US you can be completely wrong about public figures, but as long as you have no "malice"- you skate (if I remember correctly- and I may not- but the US is very lax on liable). I'd think it would be very hard to lose here. I'm not sure that makes it a good system, or goes to prove anything about the truth of cases, but there you are. It's what we have. I'd think a healthy and fair libel law would be somewhere between our system and the UK one.
