Go back and look at that article. First he says he will analyse, then he quotes a serious analyst who says the situatioan is difficult to analyse, then he throws up his hands and lists bits of info without even trying to analyse, making sure to drag in lots of "critics say" quotes and Vietnam for good measure but omitting the pieces of real more positive news I quoted to you.

You call that putting together any kind of picture?

I would bet you a large sum that he spoke to that analyst for a good while, got a rundown on the picture, didn't understand what he was told or it didn't fit with the way he wanted to write the article, and so only used the intial "the situation is complicated and murky" quote.

If a reporter is even trying, he will point out recent events, both positive and negative, and use an expert to try to provide a big picture. Not a laundry list of "critics say".
