I just heard on the radio that Countrywide - who I had thought was a reputable home mortgage lender, has 25% of it's loans in default, and 50% of it's total loans are subprime loans.

forbes.com

I believe they are the largest mortgage lender in the US.

I'm more worried about the credit markets, hedge funds. If there is a lot of worthless paper floating around then liquidity might dry up and lead to a serious recession. If the easy cheap money that we've enjoyed since the 90's goes away, a lot of the economy goes away with it.

You are spot on....the hedge funds are getting margins calls and selling stocks and metals to over their butts.
