I'm not quite as negative as you are :-)

I meet a lot of brilliant kids, and they seem capable of great things. Are there problems? Sure. Are the barbarians at the gates? No. On one gate we have sweet civilized Canada, and on the other side overpopulated Mexico- from whence cometh all your yardmen and maids and dishwashers and cooks and construction guys...

Frankly, while we have many worries in this country, other countries also have huge problems. I wouldn't want to be China for anything. They have so many huge problems- their population, the over abundance of males, their pollution problems, their finely balanced food supply, the rise of a pesky demanding middle class, alienated angry rural poor.

Now where is perfect, but the US, even with all its problems, is pretty darn great. Would I like the US to be greater? You bet. Do I think that's possible? Yes, even likely.

That there's 'cause we've become a nation of fat consumers who produce nothing the rest of the world wants and are denying it is any sort of problem, while we've sunk to 29th in math and sciences achievement. As the history of the world has demonstrated repeatedly, whoever comes up with the better technology defeats the previous title holder. We have the best techno but we wont in future generations because we've wasted our resources.

Our system works in complex and risky situations when we collaborate and various view points are given respect; so that we can come up with solutions that are in the best interests of our country. That's called being united in our stand. We are not. Stupid and corrupt extremists have sabotaged the system so thoroughly that we are bound to fail in drawn out polarizing conflicts.

We're a people riding on laurels, comfortable with the status quo of superpowerdom. That star is beginning to fade.

As an American who lives outside the USA I can say that your pessimism it completely unwarranted. Americans are now and will likely continue to be the greatest innovators and creators of technology for the forseeable future. Outside the USA the way to succeed is to have a well connected parent or to tow the party line, and innovation, small company development and creativity are NOT well rewarded. You say that the USA doesn't make anything the world wants? What in the world are MSFT, CSCO, INTC, Hollywood, and Google other than near world monopolies in their respective industries because they all developed things the world wants.

Where is the non-US company that will innovate away the US's dominance in technological and entertainment innovation? Your star may be beginning to fade, the US's dominance in the world economy is nowhere near being challenged. Otherwise, we'd all be buying the NetherlandsPod instead of the iPod....
