Nursing is tough. The first few weeks your breasts become like rocks, and sometimes your nipples get really sore- they may crack and bleed. It takes a little tough love to get the weaklings through it. Think of it as breast boot camp. You don't want drill sergants being so nice to their recruits they don't do things right, right? Well my lactation consultant was kind of like a drill instructor- or that's what my husband the navy guy said. I say make 'em cry but make 'em breastfeed.

I can't imagine why children would have years of difficulty because their mothers couldn't nurse. If there is a truly organic health problem, give them formula, but in other situations, women should be strongly encouraged to nurse- and they should be given lactation consultants, because the first baby can be tough.
