Elmat,
I lived in one of the sort of places once and they ARE very happy communities. For a foreigner, especially one from a rural background and used to lots of elbow room, the crowding and high level of personal intimacy is hard to get used to, but some seem to adapt.

I have seen a few of these sorts of places, and in every case I can think of there is some particular element in the immediate environment, say closeness to the city garbage dump, or other source of bad smells or other unpleasantness, where I would definitely want to avoid. But the developing world barrio in general is not a bad place at all.
