There have always been quacks, charlatans and hire for money contrarians in the scientific communities but with media ownership now contracted into just a few companies, there's a much larger echo chamber to spread their disinformation around.
Fox-Talk Radio-Fox-Talk Radio-then picked up by 'pundits' on CNN- CNBC-Fox-Talk Radio-MSNBC- when the echos of falsehoods get loud enough they are picked up by pundits on the more mainstream channels. Our national discourse is much more polluted than it used to be.
One reason for this is.. it is very cheap to have talking head pundits on TV news. Much cheaper than actually paying reporters to go out and dig up and cover real stories. Another reason: you can get sued for libel is you report something harmful as fact, and it turns out to be wrong. But if you are presenting assholes who just present it as opinion, no legal problems...The attorneys for the megacorp media like that. So the cable channels are filled with it. Broadcast channels are too, but cable is the worst.
