You can say it's silly, but it really isn't.

Sure charities could do a better job now, but as wealth has risen so have expectations. I'm not sure when you compare both sides of the scale- rising wealth, and rising expectations for the comfort of the poor, that charities would have the ability to perform the tasks necessary. Now you can complain that expectations are too high, but that's not a battle you will win, I think. I'm speaking practically, and not getting in to what is "correct" in terms of the level of such expectations.

If you think private charities would work I would ask you to show me a society where they have ever worked in a country as big as ours. I see no evidence that they would work at the level of our present system of government support- and I see no evidence that a majority of people (either rich or poor) are willing to accept a more imperfect system.
