They'll need to have some recovery logic for this to work. If they introduce dual core chips at or near launch, then we can presume that they are taking advantage of this. If not, then it's probably not a feature that's enabled in the launch stepping, which is the stepping that will take AMD through 2007.

Re: I think Petz is referring to defect density being less than X (from some AMD comments), not equal to X.

Knowing how AMD is usually one to exaggerate their benefits, I doubt that the "<" means anything. If their defect density were much lower - even 0.44/cm2 - they would say "<0.45". The fact that they said "<0.5" should indicate defect densities fairly close to 0.5/cm2, or close enough anyways to use 0.5/cm2 as a conservative estimate.
