Democrats Support Shams>Pelosi Salutes Bonds

washingtonpost.com, 08/08/2007

Count House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) among those on the side of Barry Bonds and his controversial record-shattering home run last night.

Though she did not attend the game, the speaker issued a statement applauding the historic 756th home run of the slugger's career last night against the Washington Nationals.

Bonds home-run record has become a cultural touchstone because of the detailed allegations that he used performance-enhancing steroids late in his career, leading to the surge in his home-run pace that allowed him to surpass Hank Aaron's 755 home runs.

Without addressing those allegations, Pelosi signaled she's on the side of Bonds, who she said took his "rightful place among the sport's immortals."<
