I agree with you about the lower incomes, but overall the savings capacity in the US economy is greater than ever. While lower incomes have less capacity to save than in the past, higher incomes have much greater capacity, and, that is where the lion's share of income lies.

Ten years ago I saw an experimental movie (Warhol style) from 1960s. A stationary camera was looking out a second floor (first floor outside the US) window in a poor New York neighborhood. In the center of the image you could see a deli store from which citizens would emerge, stand for a while, engage in conversation, make a deal, scratch their testicles, disappear, enter the store and so on for 2 hours. 50 to 100 individuals altogether. To get the same visual effect today you would have to film patients from an AIDS ward of a local hospital.
To my mind, outside of being sick, there are only two ways to be skinny: you have to be either very sophisticated or very poor.

I will try to save my breath and not spell out all the implications that make the above relevant to your post but if you don’t see my point – let me know.
