It's also necessary when there is a global meltdown of the financial markets, much more likely to be the case today than worrying about each others paper, especially when they are working in concert.

For me, at least in this situation, I respectfully disagree with your hypothesis.

As for $1650 gold, I sure don't know, but others have forecast much higher. It's certainly not part of any plan I have, or a number that I see necessary to make dollars, but I consider the current price to be low given everything that has taken place over the last few years. We'll just have to wait and see.
