The one in PeopleMarks is from a perpetual counter, and the one in profile is from a real time count, and they get out of sync occasionally because of deletions, application crashes, etc. The perpetual counter is far less expensive to fetch, and we use it on places like PeopleMarks because it is fetching them for multiple accounts at the same time and more frequently.

The more posts someone has the more likely it is that there have been one or more events to cause the variance.

I just checked. If we fixed the perpetual counter to match the actual count then PeopleMarks of 857 users would suddenly show new posts had been made -or- might show that no new posts have been made when some had. In each case it would depend on when the PeopleMark had last been reset by the marking user, so it would affect probably tens of thousands of individual PeopleMarks.

Best to leave well-enough alone.
