To: Suma who wrote (1155 ) 8/11/2007 12:30:43 PM From: bagwajohn Respond to of 1564 I learned the Raja yoga from the book The Light of the Soul, Alice Bailey. She/and the Tibetan aren't an easy read, but the Tibetan does a nice job of explaining the original yoga texts that Patanjali wrote lo those many years ago. The nutshell of that teaching, (if I can keep this short, it isn't easy to do), is to gain a passive knowledge of your thought life by just listening to it. Think of it like what you would learn if you were writing down everything you put into your mouth, as you analyze your diet. Patterns abound, because you also know how you feel along the way. A side effect of just monitoring. How you feel emotionally as you listen fits hand in hand with what is going on in your thought life, like how you feel physically would link to what you are writing down about your diet. It took me several months to digest the book while doing the exercises recommended by Patajali to gain the insights. After a few years many things started to become evident. I started recognizing that certain emotional states were linked to certain 'fleeting' thoughts which then led to 'pining' activities which then led to the ugly mood(s). All After the fact initially, the moods would be long gone, but I had a backtrail to look at to see what the heck had happened to send me into the mood. After a year or two at that stage, I could recognize the thoughtline and shift out of it (into a Light Meditation or a mantra or invocation, what the Tibetan calls dynamic substitution) and basically CONTROL my emotional state rather than have it control me with the moods. Why is that important? As the emotions take hold, the chemistry in the physical body changes, and that effects the health. Over long periods of time, any particular unresolved issue will effect the chemistry the same way every time and you could end up depleted, like everybody's favorite, adrenaline. Get that adrenaline rush everytime you think about something you might not have any control over, kind of thing. The next thing you know, you're tired all the time. So, this discipline helps you to gain some measure of skill so you are able to stay more or less balanced in ugly situations and you have a chance to improve your health and well being along the way. Some ugly situations do run you down, I'm still working with the skill even after 20 years, But, recovery is much quicker when you know how to get back up to your feet. On the topside, (because we've been talking about what happens as the ripples flow downward to the body from the thoughtlife), not only do you become aware of YOUR thought activity, and YOUR emotional activity, you start recognizing stuff that DOESN"T come from you! then its a great big OMG! Not saying psychic here, just finally at a place of integration where you can perceive the moods and thoughts of those around you because we radiate everything out into space. Its all 'white noise' all of our lives, until we 'stop splashing in the pool' and become 'still' to perceive others' splashing in the pool. Life becomes...interesting. Combine that awareness with the martial arts, and wow, this is happening! I know for a fact that every time we intend to move our bodies our field texture and shape changes and it can be felt by others. We wash each other all our lives with this 'white noise' and rarely even realize it. If someone wants to touch you, you'll feel it as if they have done it, if they've decided thats what they're going to do. Intent. its the secret to many things. Anyway, I have to go. I won't be back until Sunday night. Going to the Cambria Vineyard barbeque up in Santa Maria today. I'm quite happy to expound on all of this as anybody wants to learn more. Explanations become long winded as you can see. Have a nice weekend everybody!
