As best I can tell, there has been an enormous and long-lasting episode of yen shorting, via the carry trade. "Reduce exposure to Japanese stocks" is not the same thing as increasing exposure to the yen. I cannot claim to be able to get my mind completely around the complexities of this situation, but it seems like a decent bet that if any currency is going to rise, it might be the yen. I am not betting very heavily on this; I am just parking cash balances in FXY instead of holding dollar-denominated money-market funds. I am not leveraged at all in this respect.
