Seems to me, win or lose, we are gonna be pulling down forces considerably by 2008 just because of politics. I also think that its highly unlike we will ever get into another large land mass war like a typical WW.

No draw down will happen because there was no force buildup.

In October 2001 we had 1,387,336 on active duty in our forces.
On June 30, 2007 that number was reported to be 1,372,905.

The failure to build up is causing many of the problems.

I look at the military and its ability to preserve national defense in terms of capabilities.

After WWI (the war to end all wars) we dismantled our land campaign capability and quickly became embroiled in another land campaign. One for which we were ill-prepared.

In the 70s, 80s and 90s, we drastically reduced our unconventional and counter-insurgent warfare capability. Our opponents knew that and perpetrated that kind of war. In other words they attacked our known weakness.

If we now eliminate or seriously degrade our land campaign capability again, we should expect that to be the focus of our next war.

We must maintain a strong national defense that includes both a regular and an asymmetrical warfare capability.
