Well, we have stock car races instead of gladiators, and we have zoos instead of slaughter of exotic animals.

But as I just discovered today, America, host to thousands of poetry readings, is emulating Rome in that respect. Most poetry readings are stupid, boring, provide platforms for undisciplined egotists, and perform no function of any real value. The best that can be said for them is that they usually do not inflict bodily harm on anyone. Poetry reading were common in the later stages of the Roman Empire. Yech.
